AirPot - Inflatable Toilet

AirPot is an inflatable toilet that aims to provide a convenient and responsible toilet experience on the go, even in the heart of the wilderness.

Outdoor Toileting Went Wrong…

According to Statista, there are 59.6 million hikers in the US alone in 2022. What comes with this beloved activity is the damage we´ve done to nature - one being human faeces. People wouldn´t go number 2 out in the wild unless they have to. However, the lack of infrastructure and tools forced people to do it anyway, inconveniently and harmfully.

You might ask, what is wrong with pooping in the wild? The animals do it all the time. So why make it a big deal when we humans do it?

The short answer is that we produced really harmful faeces.

In the 1980s, microbiologists from the University of Montana implanted E. coli and salmonella in human faeces, which were then buried in the soil at various depths around the Bridger Mountains. The scientists followed the microbial levels in these samples for several seasons. Based on these investigations, they found that high levels of pathogens persisted for more than a year, regardless of the depth of the samples or the quality of the soil.

When these pathogens from human faeces leach into the soil, they multiply and increase using the nutrients produced in the faecal. Then, they begin utilizing the water source and spread it throughout the ecosystem. This problem has become more severe due to the modern human lifestyle. Human faeces contain increasingly complex substances such as chemicals, hormones brought on or triggered by pharmaceuticals, drug-resistant germs, etc. Laura C Scott, a geneticist with the U.S. Geological Survey, collected soil and water samples from national parks in 2016, and the results were quite surprising. All samples showed the presence of drug-resistant bacteria. This phenomenon is directly linked to the increase in human activity.

Lara Jacobs, a recreation ecologist and PhD candidate at Oregon State University who studies the impact of human waste on the outdoors, suggest that compared to the last 80s and 90s, the number of people in the backcountry has become so high nowadays, simply getting the poop out of sight was not sufficient anymore.

The authorities in more and more natural reserves are realizing this problem and offering tourists toilet bags. But simply squatting and trying to poop inside them is far from ideal.

So here is what we need—a truly portable toilet that is simple and comfortable to use.

The Lightest Portable Toilet!

The "Air" of AirPot - the inflatable toilet seat weighs only 0.6 kg and, when deflated, can be folded to the size of a water bottle.

How does AirPot work?

Grab the AirPot kit out of the backpack.

The whole kit, the ``Air`` plus the ``Pot`` weight less than 1 kg, and is as big as a coconut.

Step 1

After packing in the inflatable, one can still find some extra space in the pot for toilet bags, senatizers and paper towels.

Step 2

Wave it in the air for inflation, roll up the openning to seal it up tight and fold it.

Step 3

Put in the biodegradable toilet bag, which contains NASA-invented poo powder contained. It solidifies human waste instantly and breaks down bacteria and odours.

The toilet bag is held in place by four buttons.

After finishing up, toilet bags need to be taken to human waste collecting facilities for disposal.

Design Details

The pot is made of PGA, a biodegradable, thermoplastic polymer and the simplest linear, aliphatic polyester.

The 15-degree tilt on the pot as well as the inflatable toilet seat, making it easier to get up from.

The upper part of the inflatable uses PU-coated polyester, a material commonly used for tents and outdoor covers. The bottom comprises PU-coated nylon, a durable textile that works well for hot air balloons.

The materials used on the AirPot ensure its airtight, watertight quality and skin comfort. Stains and dirt come off easily, too.
